A brief account on BIM’s expansion over the years

Building Information Modeling has a dramatic history when it comes to its expansion in the landscapes of AEC industry over the years. BIM which is also known as Virtual Design and Construction has a dominant presence in AEC industry because of the fact that is has the potential to realize project outcomes and can control them significantly as per requirement. In short design and construction professionals can attain superior control over project outcomes by analyzing multidiscipline models.

Well, Building Information Modeling evolved as a concept some four decades ago but it was not practiced by AEC professionals in the industry at that time. For approximately ten years since it first appeared in the journal, the term ‘BIM’ used to be seen only in research papers. BIM as a technology and a process started to be implemented in construction projects some thirty years ago. So once AEC professionals started using BIM in construction they never looked back to their sluggish performance. BIM strengthened every aspect of construction process by enabling design and construction professionals to execute engineering services smoothly.

In the initial stages of BIM’s implementation in construction industry it only used to assist design and construction professionals in developing 3D models which incorporate all the physical and functional attributes of the building.  Building Information Models are created for each building discipline such as architecture, structure and MEP services which are often coordinated in the end.  For the purpose of developing 3D models Revit is used globally by design and construction professionals.

Slowly and gradually other effective BIM software such as Navisworks and 3ds Max came into picture which allowed AEC professionals in streamlining the process even more. Navisworks is effective project review software which is used for clash detection and for generating simulation videos. Nothing can beat BIM technology when it comes to detecting and eliminating clashes between model elements. Apart from detecting clashes construction professionals can see the entire construction process in a sequential manner with the help of simulation videos.

Numerous new dimensions have been added to 3D models over the years which are extremely significant in providing imperative information to AEC professionals. The new dimensions include 4D, 5D and 6D which help in finding out the time, cost and sustainability of the building in making.

This clearly says that BIM has made a tremendous growth since the time it was first used in AEC industry.

Structural Design Procedure: Step Wise Description

Construction of the building requires humongous time as it includes development of multiple disciplines like architecture, structure, MEP and ultimately bringing them all together. Amid all these discipline structural design is one of the most subtle disciplines as it strengthens the building and makes it stand still. It doesn’t mean that other disciplines are not important; however structural design is more convoluted. Before structure gets developed, initially lots of analyses are conducted in order to ensure sustenance of the building. The procedure starts with several analyses like site analysis, soil analysis load calculation etc. Site analysis is conducted to have an idea about feasibility of construction while soil analysis is done to identify the quality of soil and whether it is able to endure the load of the building. In load calculation it is being calculated that how much load a structure can bear. Having received green signal from all those analyses design

MEP systems provide the momentum to the building

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are incredibly crucial for any sort of building, be it residential, commercial or industrial.   The design for these systems is prepared by MEP modelers who have vast experience in the execution of BIM modeling services.  They develop design for MEP systems in Revit MEP software which is quintessentially dedicated to the design development of MEP systems only. MEP systems consist of HVAC systems, electrical systems and plumbing systems. Detailed explanation of these systems is following  HVAC Systems These systems comprise of heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems. HVAC systems have to be accurate since they are responsible for the circulation of various resources. The design of these systems must be created in a way that they reach to every part of the building where they supposed to reach. They are utilized in all kinds of building projects as well as non building projects such as industrial and c

BIM is instrumental in effective construction management

Today Building Information Modeling has become an indispensable tool for monitoring entire construction process and the fact remains that it goes beyond construction and also monitors the maintenance activities for a building in question. Prior to BIM’s adoption in Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry, construction management never proved to be realistic to fit its definition. Well, this means prior to the implementation of BIM technology, construction management was a vague phenomena as general contractors never used to achieve any concrete results in terms of project productivity based on their planning and management skills. On the other hand since the time Building Information Modeling technology have been in use construction management have become really easy for general contractors as they can access all the project information in advance. The advance availability of building information that is achieved in the form of BIM models help general contractors in c
